1.2 Convection Currents & Mantle

Vocabulary

Heat Transfer : movement of energy from a warmer object to a cooler object (three types of heat transfer radiation, conduction, convection)
Radiation: transfer of energy through empty space
Conduction: transfer by direct contact of particles
Convection: transfer by the movement of a heated fluid
Density: a measure of how much mass there is in a volume of a substance
Convection Currents: flow that transfers heat with a fluid

Outline

Radiation

  • the transfer of energy through hollow space is radiation
    • heat transfer by radiation with no contact

Conduction

  • heat is the transfer through a heated object to an unheated object
    • particles near the bottom of the spoon vibrates faster as it is heated

Convection

  • this is the heat transfer of the movement of a heated fluid
    • heat transfer by convection is differenced with tempurature and density

Convection in Earth's Mantle

  • the heat source for the currents flow in the athenosphere
    • hot columns of the mantle material slowly rise through the athenosphere
